Synopsis
Anna is an 18-year-old novice nun who was brought up as an orphan in a convent in this powerful, beautifully shot black-and-white drama, set in 1960s Poland. She is on the verge of taking her vows, but before she does so the Mother Superior insists she visit her only surviving relative Wanda, a cynical and worldly former state prosecutor. When Wanda reveals Anna’s Jewish roots and her family’s tragic past, Anna is plunged into doubt about her identity and future. Both women embark on a journey to try to find out who they really are – a story that is both intimately personal and says much about Europe’s post-war history.
