Synopsis

Woody Allen is well-known for creating neurotic, dysfunctional characters, many of which are played by him. Though he tends now to appear less frequently in his films, the stars he directs — in this case Cate Blanchett — become vessels for his nervous vulnerability and charming funniness. Here, the famed director blends comedy with more serious drama, in a loose homage to the work of Tennessee Williams. Blanchett plays Jasmine, who is 'blue' because her status as a wealthy New York socialite has been destroyed, along with her marriage to a shamed conman. Arriving in San Francisco to stay with her sister, Ginger, whose less high-class ways she is disdainful of, Jasmine tries to build a new life, while teetering on the edge of mental breakdown.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
