Synopsis

Inspired by the dichotomy of teaching murderers how to murder, Caesar Must Die marks a profoundly moving return to the big screen for master filmmakers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani. The quasi-documentary has at its heart the re-enactment of Shakespeare's tragedy, Julius Caesar. The twist lies in the fact that the players are prisoners and the backdrop is a high security prison in Rome. The in-mates' crimes appear to dramatically inform their understanding of Shakespeare's characters, with the story of friendship, intrigue, duplicity and greed feeling all the more real in their hands.
