Documentary filmmaker Bill Morrison uses a collage of archive footage, spanning several decades, to reconstruct the lost mining communities of north east England. The film does not follow a particular narrative, instead weaving together sequences of images, from the harsh realities of the miners' physical labour to family life and recreation and violent clashes with police during strikes. The focus is on examining the sociology and geography of this specific time and place, rather than the politics. The score by Icelandic musician Johann Johannsson maintains the rhythm of this visual poem.
