A highly charged drama about an overweight teenager growing up in an abusive family in New York. We watch Precious as she flips from her terrifying reality to her vivid daydreams of celebrity - and also as an alternative school and a teacher who actually cares seem to offer her the power to free herself. This is a deliberately shocking but very powerful film that moves between brutal realism and very stylised moments, all built around outstanding performances by Mo'Nique as the mother and Gabourey Sidibe as Precious.
This film has a large number of uses of very strong language, references to sexual abuse and scenes of domestic violence.
