Synopsis

The slums of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro are infamous for poverty and crime. But there is another, less reported side to the favelas that is just as significant. In this documentary we meet Irlan, a hardworking teenager who hopes his unlikely dream of becoming a top ballet dancer will deliver him from this way of living. Alongside him is Isabela, whose parents have borrowed money from a loan shark to help her get a dancer's education. But while these two undoubtedly have the necessary talent, in a country where racism and divisions between rich and poor are still everyday realities, will they be given the opportunity to realise their dreams?

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
