In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton left Britain and set sail for Antarctica on the aptly named Endurance. Before reaching dry land, the Endurance got stuck in pack ice and Shackleton and his 27-strong crew had no choice but to abandon ship. For nearly two years they trekked across ice and travelled 800 miles in a rowing boat, surviving weather so severe it was should have killed them all. Pioneering cameraman Frank Hurley, who was part of Shackleton's crew, captured these wretched experience so vividly that you get relatively close to understanding the living hell these men underwent.
