Event details
In this highly accessible Scottish documentary, humour and honesty work together to tackle an important topic: men's mental health. Duncan is a young filmmaker who wants to explore this subject, but he is not sure where to start, being a bit rubbish at expressing his own emotions. His greatest fear is losing his parents, but he can barely face the awkwardness of showing affection with a hug, let alone saying out loud that he loves them. He publishes an ad to find other ‘blokes to talk about feelings', goes on a men's retreat, interviews a trauma expert, and tentatively discusses the matter with his family. In some ways, Duncan's camera is like a shield that he has always been able to hide behind - but it now prompts him to initiate change in himself, beautifully highlighting the therapeutic value of filmmaking.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Director of Silent Men, Duncan Cowles.
Duncan Cowles is a BAFTA Scotland Award winning documentary filmmaker whose short films have screened and won awards at international film festivals. Originally from Edinburgh Duncan studied at Edinburgh College of Art and as well being a filmmaker he regularly delivers documentary filmmaking workshops for young people and adults.
