This course is part of our Teaching Film series, a collection of bitesize training focused on short film production. It has been designed specifically for educators delivering film qualifications to young people aged 14-19.

What does it take to capture that ‘dark and stormy night’ on film?

From budgeting for rain rigs to hiring a ‘wet reset’ team, there’s a hidden world of practical work that takes place long before that first call of ‘Action!’

Production management is the bridge between vision and execution, translating creative ideas into concrete steps that make a shoot possible.

A break in the clouds
In this course, you’ll discover practical guidance and activities to support you in introducing key aspects of pre-production to your learners, from script breakdowns and budgets to risk assessments and shooting schedules.

Along the way, you’ll unlock a wealth of helpful advice from experienced 1st AD, Rory Stewart (Operation Mincemeat, 2021) and talented young people who’ve earned accolades for their no-budget shorts.

Silver linings
With access to classroom-ready resources, film highlights and exemplars from real short films, you’ll have everything you need to support learners through the pre-production process.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Guide students through the steps of planning safe and efficient shoots
  • Embed industry standard practices in lessons
  • Encourage creative solutions to resource and budget limitations
  • Introduce a range of screen careers through practical activities.
