Make sense of life’s challenges with the Dashwood sisters

Jane Austen's debut novel is reimagined for contemporary audiences by an extraordinary ensemble led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles. 

Sense and Sensibility follows siblings Elinor and Marianne as they navigate life challenges including moving house, meeting new people and falling in love. While Elinor is ruled mainly by her head (sense), Marianne is principally guided by her heart (sensibility). Despite their differences, the sisters' strong bond is ever-present, and their mutual support and solidarity helps each of them deal with setbacks and remain resilient. 

Assembly-style resource Decisions and Dilemmas begins by connecting to curriculum objectives from History and English Literature. Learners will explore the changing role of women over time, and understand the challenges Austen faced as a female writer. They'll interrogate how the film's characters make decisions, reflect on their own decision-making styles, and explore the choices made by filmmakers in bringing Sense and Sensibility to the big screen. By considering how Sense and Sensibility has been adapted from book to screen, Decisions and Dilemmas supports 2026 as the National Year of Reading.
