Synopsis

Journey through a century of celluloid in this 1957 animated film that condenses 100 years of movie magic into ten minutes of biting satire. This "biography" of the silver screen is a whirlwind blend of historical fact and playful fiction, tracing the evolution of cinema from the ancient camera obscura to the Lumière brothers' revolutionary inventions, from silent comedy to the introduction of sound. The film humorously explores challenges in the film industry such as censorship and the advent of television, while not-so subtly critiquing Hollywood stereotypes. Created by the British studio Halas & Batchelor, best known for the 1954 animated feature Animal Farm, this fun cartoon uses traditional cell animation.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
